Alleged drunk driver causes 2-car crash near Islip, New York

When someone is pulled over for a possible DUI, it’s an unsure and even frightening situation. With the field sobriety tests, the Breathalyzer, the questions and a possible arrest, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. You may have heard people say that you don’t have to attempt the field sobriety tests or take a Breathalyzer. However, if you are arrested, it’s always best to consult with a criminal defense attorney. In some cases, this could help prevent many mistakes that people make when a possible arrest for DUI looms before them.

A man form Wantagh, New York, was recently charged with felony DWI after his alleged involvement in a car accident near Route 107 on Southern State Parkway in Massapequa, New York. The accident scene was only about 20 miles from Islip. The DWI charge wasn’t for alcohol intoxication, though. It was “driving while ability impaired by drugs.”

The two-vehicle crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes. The defendant’s vehicle, a Ford, allegedly smashed into an Acura. The impact forced the Ford onto the shoulder, where it struck a utility pole. Both drivers were fortunate, suffering what news reports called “minor injuries.” They were taken to Bethpage’s St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The 51-year-old driver of the Ford is now facing multiple traffic violations, unlicensed driving and felony DWI, according to New York State Police. New reports state that the man was “evaluated for drug use.” Because he has a previous conviction for DWI in the last ten years, this DWI was filed a felony by prosecutors.

It appears that the man was released after his arrest, although there are no reports as to whether he was required to post bond. His next court date will be Dec. 16 for arraignment on the charges.

DUI and DWI are serious charges that can have life-altering consequences – even more so when the charges are felonies. In addition to significant fines, possible jail time and the license revocation, such charges can impact one’s employment. Experienced criminal defense attorneys can provide valuable advice and options for their clients, as well as ensure that their clients’ rights are protected before and during court proceedings.
