We have covered a lot of cases on this blog, but a recent story out of New York is one that many of our readers might find interesting. A woman was accused of drunk driving, but she hadn’t consumed the alcoholic beverages that most people drink. Instead, the 46-year-old woman had reportedly been drinking pure vanilla extract.
The woman allegedly told police officers that she drank two bottles of the cooking flavoring. In pure vanilla extract, the alcohol content is 41 percent, which makes it comparable to drinking gin. That is a big difference from the alcohol content of imitation vanilla extract, which is 17 percent alcohol. Since vanilla extract smells like a vanilla drink, many people wouldn’t be able to detect the smell of alcohol simply by sniffing the air near the woman like they would be able to with an alcoholic beverage.
The driver was arrested on felony aggravated DWI and felony DWI after she was reportedly seen driving erratically in a Walmart parking lot trying to find her way out. She had been convicted of a DWI in 2006. In this most recent case, her blood-alcohol concentration was a whopping .26 percent, which is more than three times the legal limit.
It isn’t every day that you hear about someone being arrested for DWI because they were drinking vanilla extract.
