Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) publishes a rating of vehicles that is based on extensive testing. Manufacturers focus on these ratings and try to make the top rating, Top Safety Pick . For the model year 2018, manufacturers have really had to up their focus on safety.
Only 15 vehicles made the top list for this year. Another 47 vehicles earned the Top Safety Pick rating, which is the one that falls just behind Top Safety Pick . It is interesting to look at these ratings so that you can determine which vehicles you should consider for you and your family if you are in the market for a new vehicle.
The 2018 model year test was a stricter test than previous years. Historically, the ratings took only the impact to the driver into account when determining the safety. With this year model, the guidelines and tests were updated. The impact that crashes have on the passenger side are considered now.
When you look at the Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick lists, there are a few manufacturers who stand out. Subaru is one of these because every Subaru model except the BRZ sports coupe landed on these lists. There were 10 Toyota vehicles and nine Hyundai vehicles on the lists.
If you are in the market for a new car, the 15 vehicles that made the Top Safety Pick list are:
- BMW: 5 Series
- Kia: Forte -- sedan model
- Genesis: G80 and G90
- Hyundai: Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport
- Lincoln: Continental
- Kia: Soul
- Mercedes-Benz: E-Class -- sedan model and GLC
- Subaru: Impreza, Legacy, Outback and WRX
- Toyota: Camry
Even if you choose a safe car, your safety can still depend on other drivers. If you are in a crash, you might suffer injuries and need to seek compensation.
