Impaired driver allegedly kills couple on motorcycle

Motorcycle awareness is preached often in the media. Sadly, this doesn't always do enough to keep motorcyclists safe, especially when a driver is impaired. This is evident with the recent news out of the Village of Horseheads.

A vehicle that was driving toward a motorcycle reportedly turned left right into it. A husband and wife were out enjoying the motorcycle when they were struck. Both of them were thrown off. The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The woman was brought to a different hospital, but she was also pronounced dead.

The 18-year-old male who struck the motorcyclists is said to have been impaired by drugs at the time of the wreck. He reportedly didn't see the motorcycle before he turned. He is currently facing a misdemeanor charge for driving while ability impaired by drugs. This comes with up to a year in jail and fines of up to $1,000 if he is found guilty. He can also have his driver's license revoked for a minimum of six months. He might face additional charges once the investigation is complete.

While the driver will likely be held accountable in criminal court, this won't help the loved ones who are left to mourn the death of these two individuals. Once the criminal case concludes, they might have some closure in the matter.

Under New York law, people who find themselves dealing with a similar loss might choose to take legal action through a wrongful death lawsuit. This can help to repay some of the damages that family members have to deal with after a death caused by neglect.
