Now that winter is upon the New York area, everyone who is going to go anywhere needs to know how to walk on the snow and ice. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, so make sure that you aren’t trying to rush about when you are on this type of surface. Remember that sometimes, ice can blend in with the pavement, so you might not realize how slick it is until you step on it.
One of the first things that you need to do is to wear sticky shoes. Try to find shoes that have thick tread on the bottom. Ideally, these will be made of neoprene or rubber to give a bit more traction on the slippery surface. You might even benefit from ice grippers that slide on over your shoes.
Watch where you are going when you walk. You might need to wear sunglasses to combat the glare of the snow. This can make it easier to spot the areas that are covered in ice.
As you walk, try to do so like a penguin. Spread your feet slightly wider than normal and bind your knees a bit. This can help provide a lower center of gravity and might give you more stability. You can also use shuffling steps if you can’t walk like a penguin.
Be especially careful when you are on stairs. Take one step at a time, and be sure to hold the handrail if it isn’t icy. You might even need to carry sand or kitty litter with you to sprinkle on slick surfaces to give you added traction.
