A 20-year-old Hempstead man is charged with DWI and bribery

A 20-year-old Copiague man was stopped after allegedly committing several traffic violations early in the morning on Feb. 22. He was later taken into custody on a variety of charges including bribery, aggravated driving while intoxicated (DWI) and criminal impersonation.

According to a spokesperson with the New York State Police, the man had been driving westbound along Southern State Parkway as he passed through the Town of Oyster Bay. Police conducted a traffic stop on him as he neared exit 31 just before 1:40 a.m for undisclosed moving violations.

During the course of their investigation, police asked the young man to perform a field sobriety test. His blood alcohol level was reportedly 0.18 — more than double New York’s legal limit.

In addition to allegedly driving under the influence while underage, the officers noted in their report that the man gave them the wrong name when it was requested of him. He also apparently attempted to bribe officers by offering to pay them to let him go. The latter is a felony.

At the man’s arraignment, he pled not guilty to all charges pending against him.

Nassau County prosecutors informed the judge in the case that the young man had previously been arrested for DWI in June 2018. They also informed him that the matter was still pending.

The Long Island judge ultimately decided to suspend the young man’s driver’s license and released him on bond. He then ordered him to attend the next hearing later this month.

When someone is convicted of drunk driving, it can result in the loss of their driver’s license and incarceration. Those with drunk driving convictions may struggle with landing a job and in acquiring or maintaining certain professional licenses. An experienced attorney can work to present a strong defense against drunk driving charges on your behalf.
