Ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft saw a meteoric rise in popularity in the last few years. Many New York residents use these services daily to get around. Drivers go through strict background investigations and must have a clean driving record. Still, traffic accidents are an unavoidable reality.

Uber, the most popular ride-hailing service, has been in the news frequently. The New York Times reports Uber’s 2018 passenger incident record, including reported sexual assaults, murders and deaths resulting from collisions. 58 Uber passengers died in major accidents. Though these are only a tiny fraction of the total rides Uber provides, you must take care of yourself even in a minor collision.

Keep yourself safe

Most importantly, make sure you are safe. If you can, get out of the car and into a protected area, but remain close. Call emergency services. You will need to give a statement to the police. When authorities arrive, they will begin investigating the accident. Do not leave it up to the drivers of either vehicle to follow the appropriate processes. Some drivers may not report it to the company, which could affect you negatively.

Notify the rideshare company

As soon as you are able, notify the ride-hailing service of the accident. This creates a touchpoint with the company. A representative will contact you for more information on what occurred before, during and after the accident. Ask if there are additional steps you need to take. Be clear about what you can expect moving forward.
